Social media has become a huge part of peoples lives. Little do they know that with every social media site they are on the more information they expose to the world.
A mishap in Facebook's privacy has allowed a public database to expose over 267 million users phone numbers, names, and users IDs. This adds to the continuing problem of Facebook's privacy and security problems that plague the worlds most popular social media site. The information contained in the database was pulled down but it was exposed to the world for two weeks.
An American online publisher called TechCrunch verified a number of records in this database to match the phone numbers with people's personal accounts and claimed the database also had a users gender, name and location out and open to the public.
“This data set is old and appears to have information obtained before we
made changes last year to remove people’s ability to find others using
their phone numbers,” said Jay Nancarrow, a for Facebook who later claimed that the public database had contained around 220 millions records of personal information. Facebook also said that a reason for this security breach is that Facebook changed its security a number of times over the past few years. to better protect people over that time.
This is not the first time that Facebook has had a problem with its security and there is nothing that makes it seems like something like this wont happen again.
